Heat Pumps

Heat pumps offer a solution that is environmentally friendly and easy to install, all with very competitive running costs. As thermodynamic devices, they transfer the heat present in the air to the pool water to reduce energy consumption. Ideal for in-ground pools, the AstralPool® range is available in various models that adapt to all types of pool.

HEATING SOLUTIONS FOR SWIMMING POOLS

Equipping a swimming pool with a heating solution means being free from changes in the weather and extending its period of use. Heat pumps, electric heaters, heat exchangers - the AstralPool® product line allows everyone to enjoy water at a constant ideal temperature.


Parameters for choosing a heating system

To define a suitable system for a pool, you need to know its volume (in m3), the desired period of use and the estimated temperature (in Co) of the water that the pool should reach.


These simple parameters will allow you to correctly size the heating system to ensure maximum comfort at the lowest cost. The choice of heating equipment also depends on the energy source that will be used.


What type of defrosting?

When the outside temperature is low, the evaporator tends to accumulate ice, which reduces efficiency: this ice must therefore be removed. There are two types of defrosting:


Defrost by ventilation or economic defrost

The refrigeration circuit is interrupted for a few minutes. Only the fan operates, forcing the outside air to defrost naturally. This type of defrosting is suitable for all outdoor pools (seasonal use).


Defrost by reversed cycle or intensive defrost

The cooling circuit is reversed: the heat from the water in the pool is taken to defrost the evaporator. This allows operation at low temperatures.


How is the performance of heat pumps compared?

To compare the performance of different heat pumps, it is essential to compare the power delivered and the coefficient of performance. Two main values characterise the performance of heat pumps: their power and their coefficient of performance.


Power, expressed in kW, indicates the amount of heat transferred to the water.

It varies depending on three conditions to which the heat pump is exposed during use: outdoor air temperature, air humidity and pool water temperature.


The coefficient of performance (COP) is the ratio between the power supplied to the pool water and the energy consumption of the heat pump.

For example, a coefficient of performance of 4 means that for every 1 kWh consumed on the electricity meter, the pump delivers 4 times as much energy to the pool water, or 4 kWh.

So the higher the COP, the more efficient the equipment is.


Recommendations for installing a heat pump in a pool

The heating system includes "moving" parts (compressor, fan, etc.), whose vibrations can spread and accumulate.

To avoid or reduce disturbance, some installation rules must be followed:

  • Favour open spaces (avoid inner corners or courtyards), because the sound waves coming from all sides of the system are reflected by the surfaces.
  • Do not install the system under or in front of a window.
  • Relative to neighbouring properties:
  • Install the system as far away from property boundaries as possible.
  • The fan must not point towards neighbouring properties.


Full Inverter technology

Inverter technology allows a heat pump to change its power mode depending on the pool water temperature and weather conditions.

Therefore, it operates for the best energy efficiency at the lowest noise level.


3 modes of operation:

1. Silent: Ideal for maintaining the temperature or during the night

  • The heat pump operates at low power
  • The compressor operates in low speed ranges to minimise energy consumption - Lower noise and higher COP


2. Smart: Normal use

  • The compressor operates intelligently from low to high speeds
  • Lower noise and energy consumption


3. Powerful: Ideal to start the season or to operate in cold conditions

  • The heat pump operates at high power
  • The compressor operates in high speed ranges to heat the pool faster
  • Maximum heating power

 

Vertical Blower

Vertical air blowing is typically suitable for small spaces as a reduced free area around the unit is required.


Automatic heating / cold mode

The heat pump will automatically switch from heat mode to cold mode to stabilise the temperature in the desired range.


Soft start

In the absence of inverter technology, for high power units, soft start will prevent voltage spikes when starting the compressor, thus preventing the fuse/main circuit breaker from tripping and ensuring component viability.
